History of The H Window Company
Spilka
headquarters, Emblem, Norway

The first prototype of the H Window was developed by Harald
Kvasnes, inventor of the Spilka fully reversible projecting
hinge, in Aalesund, Norway, in 1959. The idea was to have a
window with a sash that would fully reverse without projecting
inside the room, allowing window treatments to remain
undisturbed, when cleaning the window.
During 1959, the first year of operations, only 200 H Windows
were sold. In 1960 Norwegian window manufacturers signed up as
H-licensees. In 1970 the H hardware was greatly improved, which
led to the first H Window licensees abroad in 1972.
The first sales to the United Kingdom were in 1979, and in
1984 Spilka UK was established to sell and distribute Spilka
hardware throughout the UK.
H Window Company,
Inc., Monticello, Minnesota
In 1987 the H Window Company in Monticello, Minnesota, was
established as a pilot program to build an aluminum/wood
composite window using Spilka hardware to see if the fully
reversible concept would be accepted in North America as it is
in Northern Europe. The concept and hardware being virtually
unknown in North America, along with having to learn the North
American market, resulted in a slow start, however since, the H
Window Company has proved that the concept and their window has
been accepted residentially and commercially for both new
construction and renovation markets. The H Window Company now
sells their products residentially and commercially through a
trained authorized dealer network, focusing in the
upper-mid-west states, but also serving major cities throughout
the United States.
In 1999 the Spilka projecting hinge celebrated its 40th
Anniversary with over 14 million pairs of hinges on H Windows
and other windows in 12 different countries throughout the
world.
